JOB TITLE: SWINE TECHNICIAN (NOC 84120) Job Description: Responsible for leading and assisting with all daily aspects of swine production to ensure the quality care, health and maintenance for all sows and piglets according to strict biosecurity protocols and standard operating procedures to safeguard the health of the herd as required for a fully modern hog production facility.   Tasks and Responsibilities

  1. Meet the nutritional needs of all stock, by accurate feeding and management for the different classes of stock.
  2. Monitor the environment and the operation of the controllers and maintain room temperatures appropriate to the size of pigs and external temperatures.
  3. Use veterinary or animal science knowledge to treat with appropriate medication and/or non-medical intervention any stock that are found to be unhealthy and to observe the withdrawal period for that medication.
  4. Be conscious of their responsibility to the welfare of stock under their control, and to observe the welfare protocol of the farm.
  5. Operate and maintain the feeding systems including adding or removing, adjusting feed curves, reassigning RFID tags or locations, troubleshooting and repairing basic problems with the system.
  6. Perform all activities required in the assigned department to meet farm production goals including but not limited to breeding, assist farrowing’s, processing, feeding, weaning, sorting, loading, receiving, selection for sale.
  7. Keep accurate records as per farm protocol.
  8. Maintain the section in a clean and tidy condition.
  9. Perform minor maintenance of tools and equipment as required.
  10. Pressure wash to a satisfactory standard.
Minor Duties Assist in other sections as required by the Manager/Assistant manager.   Report to: Section Manager, or if no section manager, the barn manager. Employee Supervision Responsibilities
  1. To work with and organize on an hour-to-hour basis Technicians and trainees in the sections as needed
  2. To assist the Section managers in the on-the job training of Technicians/trainees as required.

  Terms of employment Permanent, Full time – 40 hours per week   Wage $22.00 per hour - $24.20 per hour (hourly wage will be based on experience)   Skill requirements To be conversant with modern pig husbandry techniques in a commercial farm setting. Experience At least two year’s experience of pig production.
