The Manitoba Justice Corrections Division (Corrections) helps protect society by enforcing orders and sentences given by the courts. The Corrections mandate is to manage offenders with appropriate control, supervision and support. To do this, Corrections maintains a team of skilled professionals who have the genuine desire to help others.

About Us

Corrections Division (Corrections) is the largest division of Manitoba Justice. It enforces court orders and sentences for offenders who are in custody or on probation.

Our goal is to manage offenders with the appropriate degree of control, supervision and support. We provide programs and services to help offenders deal with the issues that cause conflict with the law. We provide humane care and control of offenders and help them return to society.

Corrections has two sections: Adult Correctional Services and Youth Correctional Services. We manage six adult correctional facilities and one youth facilities. We have 27 community corrections offices to supervise probation and conditional sentences for adult and youth offenders.

 

Role of Corrections Employees

Corrections staff are involved directly in managing offenders. They are part of a special, multi disciplinary team responsible for the humane care, custody and eventual reintegration of offenders back into the community.

Staff responsibilities include:

  • ensuring safety and security of youth/adult offenders with direct supervision and managing risk through case-management
  • addressing the needs of individual offenders, including risk assessments, programs and release planning
  • facilitating programs that target areas of criminogenic need, such as: antisocial thinking, antisocial behaviour, antisocial companions, education/employment, recreation/leisure, family/marital, addictions, family violence, anger management and sex offender programming
  • working in a variety of locations including living units, program facilities, recreation areas and providing community escorts
  • working with offenders who have a range of unique needs, including: gender responsivity, special needs, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and cultural diversity

Job Requirements

To be considered for the Correctional Officer Training Program, candidates must meet or have the following requirements:

  • meet medical requirements- mentally and physical fit to perform the job
  • provide a Criminal Record Search including Vulnerable Sector, MB Child Abuse Registry Check, and MB Adult Abuse Registry Check
  • submit to internal security and background checks- pass a Level 4 security screening
  • have valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificates
  • have a valid Class 5 driver’s license (Class 5I Intermediate licenses may be permitted; contingent on date code)
  • commit to the 8 week Correctional Officer Training Program. (Note: The program runs five days a week, 8 hours a day.  This is unpaid training however, candidates can receive a $2800 stipend for the training)

 

Salaries

A career with Manitoba Corrections as a Correctional Officer (CO) offers a competitive salary, comprehensive benefits, and provides opportunities for advancement.

Part-time COs are paid hourly rates. The starting hourly rate for first year, part-time positions is $31.62 and reaches $40.65 after 6 years; subject to satisfactory performance and attendance.

New officers start at the OC1 level but could progress to higher ranks of qualification and responsibility (Correctional Officer – 4 levels). In addition, other more specialized areas are available to qualified candidates such as: Program Generalist, Trades Instructor or Chief Correctional Officer.

All Correctional Officer positions begin as a part time employee however, the have the ability to work full time hours including overtime which is compensated at double time. There are also shift premiums available.
